5 Tips for Organizing the Infamous Junk Drawer

Birdseye View of a Messy Junk Drawer Full of Random ItemsIf you’re like a lot of Fisher’s renters, you possibly have a messy junk drawer (or possibly more than one!) somewhere in your house. Even other organized people can have a junk drawer packed with all sorts of things. But certainly, if you can’t find something or your junk drawer is beginning to overflow, it could be time to get it organized. The great news is that organizing your junk drawer doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. You’ll need some preparation and some significant tips to conquer that junk drawer completely!

1.   Empty and Sort

The initial step to making that junk drawer organized is to take everything out and sort each item into piles. To corral small items, try putting a clean towel on a flat surface to put your junk drawer stuff as you sort them. Broken things and trash should go into the garbage, while other items you really haven’t used or don’t need any longer may be donated to a thrift shop. All that you consider keeping should be grouped into piles of things to put away somewhere else and objects to be organized back into the drawer.

2.   Clean Up

While the drawer is emptied, please take a moment to scrub it. If you’ve been collecting junk in the drawer for some time, it may take a little bit of diligence to get it clean. If dust or grime has gathered in the corners, try making use of a toothbrush or other small bristle brush to clean those places.

3.   Put Away

With a clean drawer and your items organized into piles, it’s time to organize. Initially, sort and put away articles that don’t belong in your junk drawer. To do so simply, group together objects that are the same or that fit into a specific room. For instance, paper clips, rubber bands, and similar items can possibly be kept together with your other office supplies. Writing utensils can be situated in a pencil cup and important receipts or documents filed with your other household paperwork.

4.   Create a System

For things that you plan to keep in your junk drawer, think of making an organizational system that will help retain and keep it organized going forward. For example, you can get a sectioned drawer organizer tray, numerous make-up or ice cube trays, or small-sized containers with snap-on lids to always keep your things well-organized. You can see these inexpensive items at discount stores or home stores more or less anywhere. Just ensure to measure your drawer and the organizers carefully to see to it that it’s a good fit.

5.   Organize

One last note, you’re now prepared to sort the items you like to keep into the trays or containers in your junk drawer. Contingent on where your junk drawer is located in the house, try to keep only items that are useful for that specific room. As an example, you could keep a notepad, pens or pencils, scissors, and a coupon or receipt book in a kitchen junk drawer. In the same manner, junk drawers in other rooms should hold specific, commonly used items that don’t belong anywhere else.

A messy junk drawer can be a bother. Though by simply using this effortless advice, you can quickly tame that junk drawer back into a tidily organized area.
